Main Street Forum Connects Independent Businesses and Candidates |

The Greater Valley Independent Business Alliance (GVIBA) hosted their second community forum event last week—a worthy follow-up to GVIBA’s Community Forum Series opener in January, 2007, with award winning author Thomas Hylton (Save Our Land, Save Our Towns).
On Thursday, October 23, GVIBA’s Main Street Forum, in Luzerne, focused on just that—MAIN STREET USA—our Main Street, and what our congressional candidates had to say on related topics. In attendance at the forum, which was closed to the media, were Congressional Candidates Lou Barletta and Chris Hackett. The incumbents, Congressmen Paul Kanjorski and Chris Carney, responded via taped interviews. They, each in turn, responded to a dozen “Main Street”-oriented questions, submitted by area business owners. The topics addressed included government support for small business, health care, the economy and recession, sustainability and energy independence, jobs, and illegal immigration.
As we find ourselves caught up in the final weeks of explosive campaign ads from every media outlet and channel, how could we not have found ourselves confused about who to vote for in a number of key races? Many of those who attended the forum reported that, in listening to the candidates’ responses, they are now able to make wiser and clearer voting decisions.
Also in attendance at the forum were State Senator Lisa Baker (R-Lehman), who recently received the Guardian of Small Business Award from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB); Dallas resident Jack Cleary, whose son Mchael was killed in Iraq in December of 2006; and Independent Magazine’s fall/winter issue feature celebrity, Stephanie Jallen. A special magazine subscription fundraiser was launched during the forum—all subscription monies received will be donated to the Stephanie Jallen Paralympic Fund. |

Congrats to GVIBA (Greater Valley Independent Business Alliance) for last niight's Main Street Forum. It was professionally planned and presented, and very informative - sorry more of our members were unable to attend. Membership in SWBBA automatically makes you a member of GVIBA, and provides access to GVIBA events such as last evening's forum, as well as other happenings within the Luzerne Merchants Assn., Kingston Area Merchants & Professional Assn., and the Back Mountain Business Assn. All of these alliances have had growing pains and, like us, they did not give up. Main Street (as local businesses are referred to in this group) is the engine that drives each community. We are all therefore encouraged to buy local and support independent businesses in our community, and to also support local business groups and the community events they host. When times are tough and bills are due, we are not the recipients of government bail outs, but all of us working together to support our local business commuities will make it happen... Many of our members are featured in the new issue of Independent Magazine, and this is a very impressive issue. Please contact me if you are not receiving it, and I will deliver one to you. Support SWBBA and plan on attending our meetings. Your voice is needed and appreciated... Pat |

There are those that talk about cleaning up the area, and there are those that pick up a shovel and do something about it. That was the case this past week when the members of the SWBBA go together to clean up a section of Carey Avenue. Another positive sign of how much can be accomplished when individuals combine their efforts.
A Message from the President Carey Avenue looks sensational - thank you to all the volunteers who came out and worked HARD - it wasn't easy - but our efforts were noticed. I have received several phone calls and many comments from residents who noticed what we were doing and wanted to thank our group. My personal thank you to Bob Hogan, Jim O'Connell, Angela Rackleff, Brian and Marcy O'Donnell and their team, Lonnie Truskowski and his wife and son, Miriam and Joe Sable, Joe Castrignano (prospective new member), and Rick - I hope I got you all - you all went above and beyond and your efforts paid off - the City picked up our bags and piles this afternoon and the street looks great - we should be on WYOU news this evening and maybe WBRE as well - again, thank you all for your efforts...
